WordPress vs. custom build: what's right for your brand

It's the question almost every project starts with. The honest answer is: it depends, but on a small number of things that are easy to reason about once you name them.

WordPress powers a huge share of the web for good reason: it's flexible, familiar, and lets non-technical teams publish without calling a developer. A custom build, on the other hand, gives you total control and nothing you don't need. Neither is "better", they're suited to different situations.

Choose WordPress when

  • You'll be publishing often and want to manage content yourself.
  • You need a known ecosystem of plugins for things like bookings or commerce.
  • Budget and timeline matter more than having a bespoke back end.

Choose a custom build when

  • Performance and a very specific experience are the priority.
  • Your needs are unusual enough that plugins would fight you.
  • You want a lean codebase with no moving parts you didn't ask for.

The real deciding factors

Strip it back and it usually comes down to three things: who maintains the site, how often it changes, and how unique the experience needs to be. Answer those honestly and the right choice tends to reveal itself.

And if you're not sure, that's exactly the kind of thing worth a short conversation before any code is written.
